NewsShark Plus
Live Video. Anywhere.

The DSI NewsShark is a portable ENG transmission system that will change the way your station covers breaking news.

The NewsShark field unit is factory configured to mount on the bottom of most ENG cameras, using an industry-standard 1⁄4-20 screw mount.

Weighing only 1.3 lbs. (590 gm) and 3 3⁄8" x 5 1⁄8" x 1 1⁄4" (85.725 x 136.725 x 31.75 mm) in size, NewsShark encodes—using your choice of 4G and/or Wi-Fi technologies to transmit—live real-time video and audio in real time back to the studio, with higher quality video than cell phones and without the tangle of wires and hardware involved when using a cumbersome backpack or ganged modems.

NewsShark’s unique Robustivity™ feature adjusts the image quality to compensate for varying bandwidth availability, so that you always transmit the best picture that the network can support. H.264 video and AAC audio encoding are used for highest efficiency operation. The NewsShark system also features two full duplex IFB feeds for the air talent and a separate IFB for the camera operator.

Safe and Efficient

NewsShark operates using a single ruggedized FCC-approved embedded cellular or WiFi modem that complies with Federal Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) levels. Similar units operate with multiple generic USB stick modems resulting in potentially unsafe and non-compliant SAR levels.NewsShark PlusSince NewsShark is mounted to the bottom of the camera, its antenna is located at a greater distance from the camera person’s body than with other systems, further reducing any opportunity for dangerous Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) levels adversely impacting your camera person’s health.

The NewsShark RF design team recognized the need for a custom high-gain antenna vs. the low-performance integrated antennas in the consumer-level modems used in other systems. NewsShark’s high-gain antenna achieves two important goals; when nearer the cell tower, NewsShark transmits less power as dictated by the cell sites — when further away, the high-gain antenna provides better performance and reliable cellular capture and transmission under the most challenging circumstances, even in areas of poor cell coverage.

Unlike the NewsShark, multi-modem systems are susceptible to RF intermodulation distortion, sometimes resulting in compromised cellular capture, thus reducing data rates to less than what’s required for broadcast-quality transmission.

Newsgathering

The DSI NewsShark can help your station be first on the air from the site of breaking news, sending video and audio back to the studio while your main news vehicle is setting up.

Unlike a typical news truck, NewsShark can feed video while in motion and is so simple to use that the operator only needs to power it on. This makes it a great tool to take advantage of your entire station’s staff.

The NewsShark system also serves as an affordable means of covering stories outside of your market or beyond the coverage area of your central receive system. It makes it easy to get a second or third live feed from events anywhere in the world where Wi-Fi* or cellular service are available. Just input an IP address from any of your NewsShark encoders into your decoder and you’re on the air.
